This year, more than most, I hope we’ll get past the notion of “a new beginning” and instead start to think of new chapters as “a new building”.
We are, most of us, creatures unhappy with our lot - striving for more, discontent without reaching for something we don’t have or haven’t accomplished.
And so we play games with our minds. We cajole it into thinking, this, THIS new start is what we need to finally build momentum so that we may hit that weight goal, or finally write that book or get that promotion.
But it’s not the fresh start we need. It’s understanding that we have simply been building up to it, whether we’ve realized or not. Every step, every move building towards that thing, waiting for our pushes of hard work to reach the tipping point until we breakthrough.
So let’s not fool ourselves into thinking we need to go back to the start. Instead, let’s spend some time reflecting on what we’ve done already to get us here and then make a plan to get to breakthrough.
Let us value the sums of our experience, the hard-fought learning and use it wisely, judiciously to get to where we strive for. And make no apologies for the winding road the journey may have taken. But be grateful for every day that we have the chance to try.
